On March 2, 2025, Australians will unite for the 35th Clean Up Australia Day, making a significant impact on the environment. This day isn’t just about picking up litter; it’s about coming together to create lasting change for our planet. Whether you're a long-time environmental advocate or just starting to think about sustainability, this day provides an opportunity to act.

A Record-Breaking Year

This year promises to be Clean Up Australia Day’s most innovative yet, with more participation and exciting new initiatives. Communities are more engaged than ever, motivated by a shared sense of responsibility. This growth reflects a nationwide shift toward a cleaner, greener future, with over 500,000 people expected to participate in this year’s event across the country.

Innovative Initiatives and Community Awards

One standout feature this year is the launch of the Community Awards. These awards celebrate local volunteers and groups who go above and beyond for the environment. It’s a wonderful opportunity to recognise the incredible efforts of people on the ground making tangible differences, from coastal clean-ups to park restoration efforts. Last year, more than 15,000 community groups participated, and this number is set to rise even further

Addressing E-Waste Concerns

As e-waste continues to rise, Clean Up Australia Day is responding with new initiatives to tackle this growing problem. Last year, a concerning 7.7% rise in e-waste was recorded, with vapes making up nearly a third of the litter. This highlights the need for responsible recycling and careful consideration of our electronic consumption. Special e-waste bins will be provided at clean-up sites, but we all need to play our part in reducing this growing waste stream. Over 100 tonnes of e-waste were collected at last year’s event.

How to Join the Movement

Here’s how you can get involved:

  1. Visit the Official Website: Head to the Clean Up Australia Day website to find local events.

  2. Pick Your Location: Choose an area that’s convenient for you—there are plenty of options.

  3. Register Online: Sign up with your details and start planning with friends or family.

  4. Spread the Word: Encourage others to join in—everyone’s help matters!

  5. Prepare for Action: Grab your gloves and join the movement to clean up and make a difference.

There are also opportunities to get involved in community, business, and school clean-ups, so there’s a way for everyone to participate!

Collective Action for a Cleaner Future

While the world faces many challenges, including pollution and climate change, events like Clean-Up Australia Day show that collective action is powerful. The small, individual steps we take can lead to significant global change. By participating, we contribute to a positive, sustainable future for our children and the planet.

Why We Need Hope More Than Ever

Though the world faces challenges, from pollution to natural disasters, it’s essential to remember that good people are out there, working tirelessly to make the world better. Clean-Up Australia Day is proof of that. Last year, volunteers collected over 15 million kilograms of waste, showing just how much we can accomplish when we come together. Let’s keep the momentum going, stay hopeful, and continue making a difference.
